Our Advocacy for People Seeking Asylum and Refugees
House of Welcome has supported refugees and asylum seekers through direct services and advocacy. We amplify their voices, raise awareness, and push for policy changes that ensure fair treatment, stable housing, and access to essential services.
With extensive experience in providing direct services to people seeking asylum and refugees, we have an important role to play in assisting the government to make positive policy changes. Our vision is for a fairer and more equitable society that recognises the dignity and human rights of all people.

Our advocacy mission
Educate
We strive to raise public awareness about the realities of forced displacement and the complex challenges faced by refugees and people seeking asylum. Through storytelling, community engagement, and educational campaigns, we foster greater understanding and empathy, dispelling myths and building support for inclusive, compassionate responses.
Amplify voices
We are committed to ensuring that the lived experiences and perspectives of forcibly displaced people are at the forefront of decision-making. By providing platforms for refugees and asylum seekers to share their stories, we empower them to directly influence the policies and services that impact their lives. We believe that meaningful change begins when those most affected are heard and involved in shaping solutions.
Influence policy
We work to create lasting, systemic change by engaging with lawmakers and advocating for legislative and policy reforms. By presenting evidence-based recommendations and highlighting real-world impacts, we urge governments to adopt or amend policies that uphold the rights, dignity, and well-being of forcibly displaced people. Our goal is to ensure that Australia’s laws and systems reflect fairness, justice, and humanity for all.
How do we advocate?
-
We work closely with sector agencies, peak bodies, and community partners to amplify our collective impact. By sharing knowledge, resources, and expertise, we strengthen our advocacy efforts and build a unified voice for positive change. These partnerships enable us to address complex challenges more effectively and ensure that our actions are informed by the best practices across the sector.
-
We actively engage at local, state, and federal levels to drive meaningful policy change. Through strategic campaigns, public petitions, and direct dialogue with decision-makers, we raise awareness of critical issues affecting people seeking asylum and refugees.
-
Our campaigns are grounded in the real-world experiences of the people we serve. We collect and analyse client stories, data, and research to inform our advocacy, ensuring that our recommendations are credible and impactful. By highlighting lived experiences and measurable outcomes, we make a compelling case for policy and service improvements that truly meet the needs of forcibly displaced people.
-
We actively engage with local communities to build widespread support for refugee rights and social inclusion. Through educational workshops, public events, and collaborative projects, we foster understanding, challenge misconceptions, and inspire action. By mobilising community members, we create a supportive environment where refugees and people seeking asylum can thrive.
